Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte is set on the English moors in 1801. The story is told through the eyes of Nelly, the long-time housekeeper at Thrushcross Grange. A young man named Lockwood rents the house during the winter of 1801 from his reclusive landlord, Heathcliff, who resides at the neighboring Wuthering Heights. Nelly, who grew up at Wuthering Heights, recounts the story of the Earnshaw and Linton families, as well as of the dark-skinned orphan Heathcliff in a novel that resembles a modern-day soap opera.

One night Mr. Earnshaw returned from a business trip to Liverpool with the mysterious boy that he planned to raise with his own children, Catherine and Hindley. But it wasn't an easy adjustment for the Earnshaw children. Heathcliff and Hindley often competed for the attention of Mr. Earnshaw, which eventually led to Mr. Earnshaw sending his son away to college. But Catherine and Heathcliff became good friends, spending a lot of time together playing on the moors. This continued until Catherine changed, became a young lady. However, Heathcliff did not change and grow, had a difficult time accepting the change in Catherine, and felt rejected by the one person he loved.

When Mr. Earnshaw died, Hindley inherited Wuthering Heights and came home to stay. He was even more cruel to Heathcliff than in the past, which led Heathcliff to leave Wuthering Heights. Meanwhile, Hindley's wife, Frances, gave birth to a son, but died during childbirth In addition, during Heathcliff?s absence, Catherine married Edgar Linton.

Heathcliff only returned to Wuthering Heights when he had made his fortune, when he thought he could avenge the earlier abuses. And, by the time Heathcliff returned, Hindley was an alcoholic and gambler who was very deep in debt. This gave Heathcliff the opportunity to loan him money, which then put him in line to inherit Wuthering Heights upon Hindley's death. In addition, Heathcliff married Isabelle Linton, which led to the birth of his son, Linton. Catherine's marriage to Edgar led to the birth of her daughter, also named Catherine. But Catherine does not live to see her daughter grow up.

As the novel comes close to its conclusion, Heathcliff has forced Catherine and Linton to marry so that he may control Thrushcross Grange. Edgar and Linton have both died, leaving only Catherine, Hareton, and Heathcliff. Heathcliff has never recovered from losing his beloved Catherine. Even after accumulating wealth and watching the destruction of the people who wronged him, Heathcliff is not happy, there is only grief and suffering at Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange. It is not until after Heathclifff's death that Catherine and Hareton decide to be married, could have any happiness in their lives.
