Step 4: Creating an Outline

You have already selected your topic, written your thesis statement, conducted your research, and taken notes. Now, you must organize your material into a usable format. Use your notes to create an outline that will be your roadmap as you begin to write your paper.

The outline may be a topic outline, which is set up using keywords, or a sentence outline, which may be set up using what will become topic sentences for the paragraphs in your paper.

For example, if you were to create an outline for the paper on Grace Murray Hopper, your topic outline might look something like this:

I. Introduction

II. Her Early Life

     A. Vassar College

     B. Teaching Career

     C. Yale University

     D. Vincent Foster Hopper

III. Her Middle Life

     A. US Naval Reserves

          1. Harvard's Cruft Laboratories

               a. Mark I

               b. Mark II

               c. Mark III

          2. Eckert Mauchly Computer Corporation

               a. UNIVAC-1

               b. A-O Compiler

               c. FLOW MATIC and COBOL

IV. Her Later Life

     A. Work at Sperry Corporation

     B. Awards and Accomplishments

V. Conclusion
