Writing a Book Report

Most book reports follow a similar format, but most teachers have their own requirements. So be sure you understand your teacher's instructions.

The standard book report follows the five paragraph format. Paragraph 1 is the introduction, which includes the name of the book, author, setting, and a very short statement about book, its characters, or its theme. This paragraph introduces your reader to the book.

Paragraphs 2-4 are the body of your report and include specific details that allow your teacher to assess whether you actually read the book and how well you understood what you read. In this part of your report, you will provide specific details on the story's plot, the characters, and discuss the conflict in the story.

The final paragraph may include your reaction to the book, specifically provide details on its strength and weaknesses. You should include examples from the book to support your conclusions.
